Laptops: What to Buy?

Purchasing a laptop does not have to be a frustrating experience. In fact, with a little background information you should be able to browse the selection of laptops and choose one which will fit your needs without destroying your bank account. This post will describe how to figure out your computing needs so you can purchase a cost-effective laptop.

Before stepping foot into an online or physical laptop retailer, you must understand your needs. For simplicity, categorize yourself into the following set of needs:

• Low-end: Internet, e-mail, messenger programs
• Power User: Gaming, watching videos, listening to music
• High-end: Multimedia editing, programming, high-quality video (for gaming)

Low-end users will do well with budget laptops, power users will enjoy using mid-range laptops, and high-end users will need the most technologically advanced laptops. Based on current trends, low-end users will likely do well with low computing power and around 512MB-1GB of RAM (add 1GB to that for Windows Vista). Power users will need mid-range computing power, often with hyper-threading or dual cores and at least 2GB of ram. High-end users should look for the most powerful laptops with the most RAM, because odds are they will push the laptop to the limit.

One more laptop concern is portability. When choosing a laptop, you must decide to make a tradeoff between size and functionality. Being cost-effective not only required understanding the components, but also your needs in terms of portability. Make this decision before shopping for a laptop as well so you can avoid frustrations in the future.
