Details Classic art for this superb biographical film from the team responsible previously for the story of Douglas Bader in "Reach for the Sky". This story is of Violette Szabo the brave wife who courageously risked her life spying for Britain following the loss of her French husband who was killed in action. The film poster bears the printed signature of Eric Pulford - one of the greatest British film poster artists. The artist has captured the expression perfectly of a World War II Resistance fighter desperate, resilient and determined to avenge here Husband's death. Eric Pulford painted the poster in 1958 for what was a film made in black and white. Pulford ran the British agency Downton's which produced many of the best of the film posters in the 1950's and 60's with Eric travelling to Italy on regular occasions to employ some of the finest Italian artists who worked with material he carried across from England. This classic film poster has a 1" x 1/2" rough removal paper-loss at the top left corner together with some additional greyish smudge marks at the right of the poster which look very similar to the printed marks around Virginia McKenna's coat. These minor faults we do not find a problem at all with this type of poster and some may feel that they add to the character.
